Biotechnology is a frontier area offering a new technological base to understand living beings at the molecular level, unravel the genetic codes that govern biological processes and thereby be able to manipulate those for the betterment of humankind. Biotechnology is not just one subject; rather it is an amalgam of a number of different scientific fields. Biotechnology uses knowledge of microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry just to name a few. In recent times, new concepts such as bioinformatics, proteomics, microarrays are becoming standard terminologies within this vast area of research. Novel research findings by scientists in this field of science are helping people worldwide in their quest for a healthier lifestyle. A career in biotechnology is not just a job; it is an invitation to participate in the development of new products and processes that also contribute to improving people's standards of living. Major avenues of career development opportunities are as follows: Research and development in the processing of diverse biological materials and in the field of managing bio-industries. Employment opportunities are available in the industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages and plant and animal biotechnology and other options in forensics, disease and diagnostic therapy, education and environmental protection bodies. Opening ways for pursuing further studies at Masters or Doctoral levels.

The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (DESE), earlier known as Department of Biological Sciences and Environmental Science, have been the leader in offering Environmental Science program in Nepal , starting its undergraduate program since 1994. Through all these years, it has been significantly accumulating experience and resources to deliver quality education and perform quality research. Faculties with diverse academic backgrounds, quest for leadership in providing best environmental studies and continuously evolving teaching-learning and research processes are its major characteristics. Aim of the Department: To produce self-motivated, objective, confident, and creative graduates of highest quality with an entrepreneurial attitude To develop as a center of excellence in Environmental education and researches. The academic program of the department contribute to fulfill the need of highly competitive, skilled and trained manpower in the areas of research, development, impact assessments, standards monitoring, management, conservation, legal measures, policy formulation, implementation and other relevant environmental fields. The graduate will also be competent enough to pursue higher studies in any reputed institutions. The department also pursues research relevant to local national, regional and global significance. Focus is also given to collaborative researches with national and international organizations and academic institutions.

The Department of Agriculture (DoAG) under School of Science is the youngest department of Kathmandu University established in 2020. The department offers Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.Sc. Ag.). The B.Sc. Agriculture Program will run at famous Agricultural City -Panchkhal Municipality as an expansion of the School of Science Program in Bagmati Province, the Government of Nepal with a motto “Knowledge and Skill: Campus to Community" from this academic year 2021/2022.
